Letter from the President
Fall is here, where did the summer go?
Summer used to be a slow time of year for WBBA and our members; now it is one of our busiest seasons.
The highlight of this summer, was our largest event of the year, Life Science Innovation Northwest (LSINW)! LSINW is a year in planning, and 2013 was our biggest and best event yet! LSINW has grown in size and stature, and is North America’s largest life science exposition! There were new features this year, including: Women to Watch, Jimi Helix & the Pipettes, as well as a record number of presenting organizations, one-to-one meetings, and excitement and energy!
I mentioned in my opening comments at LSINW that transactions have been picking up in our sector. Since late May, there have been more than 20 transactions by Washington life science organizations, accounting for nearly $500 million coming into the state to fuel the innovation!
Some of the more notable transactions include:
- EKOS acquisition by BTG for $180 million. Bothell will remain Ekos’ home
- NanoString’s $54 million IPO
- Cardeas Pharma’s $34 million series B raise
The $500 million in transactions do not include: Theraclone’s reverse merger, Omeros’ NDA filing, or Immune Designs' collaboration to discover cancer drugs. It was a very busy few months for our members! So much for life science executives taking the summer off :) !
In addition to LSINW, we have been busy working on WBBA’s 10 year vision, and will roll out where we see Washington’s life science ecosystem in 2023 at the Governor’s Life Science Summit & Annual Meeting on October 25th. Stay tuned. The WBBA has also hosted several CEO Forums across the state, bringing our state’s leadership together to discuss how we can all participate in growing our industry.
This years’ Summer Social brought 250 life science leaders to our roof-top deck in August for a rousing good time had by all. The WBBA Golf Invitational, our only fundraiser for our BioPac was a big success as well. More than 100 golfers came together for a great day of golf, fun and in support of the state’s only life science PAC. We also supported several soldiers, who joined us for the day in a joint effort with Joint Base Lewis-McChord Soldier & Family Assistance Center (SFAC).
We are looking forward to hosting LongTech Medical Technology, an international business accelerator located in Jiangsu Province (near Shanghai), China for our latest VIP Forum, as well as another WINGS investor dinner.
Make sure that you also check out our 2013 activity calendar, you don’t want to miss any of the great events, or opportunities to network or to be a sponsor this year.
I would like to thank all of you for an outstanding 2013 thus far! Without our incredible members, the WBBA would not be able to provide the support that is contributing to one of Washington’s largest and fastest growing industries.
I look forward to seeing each of you in the upcoming days. Stay tuned to additional events and activities by following us at www.washbio.org, or follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
